| Overview of Church: | St. Mary the Virgin is one of the oldest churches in Sussex, dating from the 12th century. It was built by the Knights Templar to. serve their Preceptory of Shipley and originally consisted of a Norman nave, separated from a slightly narrower chancel by a sturdy tower. The entrance to the church was at the west end, where the original Norman carved stonework can still be seen.
In 1830 a north aisle was added and the original shingled roof to the tower was replaced by the current parapet. In 2002 the lead parapet gutters and tiled roof to the tower were renewed under the direction of Architect Val Hinde. The Trust contributed £4,000 towards the cost. |
